Research

Our research

We investigate the molecular mechanisms that regulate pain perception, with a particular emphasis on the neuronal membrane proteasome (NMP) in sensory neuron function.

Sensory Neuron Function

Investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying sensory neuron excitability and signaling.

Dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons detect and transmit information about touch, temperature, itch, and pain. Our laboratory investigates the molecular mechanisms that regulate sensory neuron function using primary neuron cultures, calcium imaging, and behavioral approaches.

Neuronal Membrane Proteasome Sensation

Understanding how the NMP modulates sensory pathway-dependent sensitivity.

The neuronal membrane proteasome (NMP) is a membrane-associated proteolytic complex found in subsets of peripheral sensory neurons. We investigate how NMP activity regulates sensory neuron signaling and sensitivity to different sensory stimuli.

NMP and Neuropathy

Understanding how neuropathy alters NMP function and how these changes contribute to neuropathic hypersensitivity and pain.

Peripheral nerve injury can alter sensory neuron signaling and produce persistent hypersensitivity. We investigate how neuropathy changes NMP abundance and function, and whether NMP-dependent signaling contributes to altered sensory responses and neuropathic pain.

Methods

Our approach

We combine techniques across scales — from molecular signaling to whole-animal behaviour.

  • Molecular biology

Gene knockdown and overexpression, protein biochemistry, mass spectrometry, and single-cell RNA sequencing.

  • Calcium imaging

Real-time visualisation of neuronal activity using fluorescent calcium indicators.

  • Primary neuron culture

Primary cultures of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) and trigeminal ganglion (TG) neurons to investigate sensory neuron function and signaling.

  • Behavioural assays

Mouse models to investigate normal sensation and neuropathy-associated alterations in pain, touch, and itch.

  • Proteomics

Mass spectrometry to identify proteasome substrates and protein interactions.
